Tips for Stitching on Faux Embroidery Leather

Have you tried Kimberbell's faux Embroidery Leather? It's soft, supple, and adds a dreamy dimension to machine embroidery projects. I love how faux leather brings an authentic touch to applique designs!
For example, this fudge pop from Kimberbell's Two Scoops Bench Pillow was done with chocolatey Embroidery Leather. The smooth texture makes this design look like a real dipped dessert!
Embroidery Leather holds stitches very well and is quite easy to work with. Having said that, I've got just a few tips for achieving beautiful results! 😀
Recommended Stabilizers
The right stabilizer is an important part of machine embroidery success. Our Product Development Team works with faux leather a LOT and they've compiled a list of their favorite stabilizers for you!
When stitching on leather, try these Kimberbell stabilizers:
- Medium Cut-Away (Learn more HERE!)
- Sticky-Back Tear-Away (Learn more HERE!)
- Wash-Away Sticky-Back (Learn more HERE!)
- Wash-Away Topping (Learn more HERE!)
Extra Tips
Wash-Away Topping prevents stitches from sinking into the leather. It's also a great idea to install a new 70/10 needle before stitching AND slow down your machine speed!Trimming Leather
Practice on a scrap piece of leather before trimming your project. - If the underside of the leather is a contrasting color, keep the scissor blades parallel to the stitching while cutting. That way, the underside color will not show. (Learn more HERE.)
Extra Tips
When pressing faux leather, always use a pressing cloth to protect the material. Also note that Embroidery Leather is hand wash or dry clean only!
Leather Snap Trays
Speaking of faux leather, many of you are having a whole lotta fun with Kimberbell Snap Trays! Made from faux leather PVC, these embroiderable blanks snap easily together to form a tray.
Just add your favorite embroidery design, then snap the corners together. Voila! A tray. 😍
