One Project, Six Techniques

If machine embroidery has your โค๏ธ (And I know it does!), you're going to love Kimberbell's  Digital Dealer Exclusives project for March! The Embroidery Hoop Stitch Sampler features six of our most popular machine embroidery techniques: applique, chenille, decorative stitching, fringe, piecing, and redwork.

If you're new to the craft, please allow me to teach you about these techniques and how they take your machine embroidery projects to the next level. (And the best news? They're all EASY!)

Applique

Applique is when a separate piece of fabric is sewn into a design in place of stitches. This technique elevates a designโ€™s aesthetic appeal while decreasing the overall stitch count.

These darling watermelon slices are all applique!

Applique can include a variety of textures besides just regular fabric. For example, you can add sparkle and shine with Applique Glitter Sheets, Embroidery Leather, Mylar, Vinyl, and more! ๐Ÿ‰

Chenille

Chenille adds a fuzzy, dimensional look to your embroidery. At Kimberbell, we create chenille by layering fabric, stitching rows on top, and then cutting the top layers and fluffing them with a brush or file.

Here's what chenille looks like. Click HERE to see exactly how to do it, step by step!

We use chenille on a wide variety of Kimberbell projects. Don't be afraid to try it! ๐Ÿ“

Decorative Stitching

Decorative stitching is exactly what it sounds like: stitches digitized with a decorative pattern. With this technique, the digitizer has done all of the work for you! You just get to watch the magic happen.

There are many types of decorative stitches. For example, look at the outline of these white flowers!

Pretty fun, huh? (I also love the decorative stitches featured on the Embroidery Hoop Stitch Sampler!) ๐ŸŒธ

Fringe

Fringe is a technique that creates fluffy, dimensional loops. The design is digitized for fringe with satin stitches, then the bobbin is clipped from behind and fluffed from the front! It's super easy and fun to do.

These flowers are a good example of fringe. To learn how to fringe, click HERE!

Fringe may be a tiny technique, but it packs a big punch on many an embroidery project. ๐ŸŒผ

Piecing

If you're a quilter, you're familiar with piecing . . .but we make the process a whole lot easier on the embroidery machine! Basically, piecing is stitching several small pieces of fabric together.

Our in-the-hoop method ensures you have perfect points and crisp edges. Take a look at these pinwheels!

Piecing in-the-hoop of your embroidery machine is so simple, it almost feels like you're cheating. ๐Ÿ˜€

Redwork

Redwork is a series of outline stitches that are done in one color (usually red, hence the name). This type of embroidery was very popular during the Victorian era. (Of course, it was all done by hand back then.)

These pincushions are done with a redwork technique. Very simple. Very pretty!

Redwork

You might say that redwork combines the nostalgic beauty of the past with the ease of the present. ๐Ÿ˜
