Stabilizer Spotlight: Fusible Backing

Fusible Backing

If you've ever made a Kimberbell feature quilt or bench pillow, you know we recommend Kimberbell Fusible Backing for every block.

But...did you know we actually use Fusible Backing for just about everything we stitch? Let's take a close look at this remarkable Kimberbell product and talk about why Fusible Backing makes such a big difference.

What is Fusible Backing?

Kimberbell Fusible Backing is a thin, pliable stabilizer that adheres to the back of your fabric before you stitch. You simply press it on with a dry iron for about 20 seconds and it fuses (hence the name!) to the fabric.

Why Use Fusible Backing?

Fusible Backing adds extra structure to fabric, resulting in greater stability and more beautiful stitches. (You won't believe the difference it makes!)

You can use Kimberbell Fusible Backing on a wide variety of fabrics. We especially love how it gives stability to stretchy knits and other fabrics with a loose weave, like linen. Fusible Backing also prevents shadowing on light applique pieces.

Oh, and the best part? Fusible Backing greatly reduces puckering, especially in stitch-intensive designs! 😀

Fusible Backing also prevents pilling. You know those little balls that form on old, ratty sweaters? That's pilling, and it happens as your needle goes in and out of fabrics like wool, felt, and flannel. No one wants that! Add Fusible Backing to the back of these fabrics and you'll notice a big difference.

How is Kimberbell Fusible Backing Different?

You might be thinking of similar products that have been on the market for years. But Kimberbell Fusible Backing is different in very specific (and game-changing) ways:

Instead of being coated with little pin dots of glue, Kimberbell Fusible Backing is carefully and uniformly sprayed with an adhesive. This means that our Fusible Backing takes less time to stick to the fabric AND adheres more closely than other brands, resulting in a nice, flowing drape.

It just sort of becomes one with the fabric...there's no stiffness at all! You'll also find that Kimberbell Fusible Backing won't leave gummy residue on your needle.  😀

Where Can I Find Kimberbell Fusible Backing?

You can find Kimberbell Fusible Backing at your favorite quilt shop. Because it's a Specialty Stabilizer, you're looking for GREEN packaging. Choose between 20" and 12" rolls for projects large and small.

I've always said that stabilizer is the unsung hero of machine embroidery. The more you know about stabilizer, the better your results will be! I hope you enjoyed learning about Kimberbell Fusible Backing.

Psssst...look for more Stabilizer Spotlight posts in the weeks to come!
