Understanding Kimberbell Orange Pop Rulers (Plus Cookie Recipe!)

OPR Social

Kimberbell Orange Pop Rulers have been around for a few years now, but they're still just as wonderful, innovative, and life-changing today as they were when they first hit the shelves of your favorite quilt shop!

Let's review what Orange Pop Rulers are, how they work, and where you can find them. 😊

What They Are

Available in both square and rectangle shapes, Orange Pop Rulers have an open frame that helps you visually center your embroidery or applique designs before you cut.

The extended corner channels allow your rotary cutter to cut perfectly square corners, and no-slip grips on the back prevent the rulers from slipping while you're cutting. The sizes "pop" together so you can nest them!

Kimberbell Orange Pop Rulers come in a variety of sizes and each set also comes with additional, smaller rulers as well.

How They Work
  • Start by stitching your embroidery or applique design. Be sure to use a larger piece of fabric than what your finished block size will be, as fabric always pulls in when stitched! Remove the fabric from the hoop.
  • Visually center your applique or embroidery design within the very smallest Orange Pop Ruler. (It's okay if the design doesn't fit within that ruler. Right now, you're just centering the design.)
  • Pop the next size of ruler onto the first ruler and keep adding rulers until you have the size of block you need.
  • Keeping the block centered, remove the extra inner rulers. (If possible, keep the larger rulers nested together along the outside so you have more surface area to hold while cutting.)
  • If you're right-handed, insert the rotary cutter in the bottom left extended channel with the blade against the ruler. (A 45mm rotary cutter is recommended.)
  • If you're left-handed, insert the rotary cutter in the bottom right extended channel with the blade against the ruler.
  • Holding the ruler steady, cut one smooth stroke up until the end of the cutting channel is reached.
  • Set the rotary cutter aside. Carefully rotate the cutting mat 90 degrees counterclockwise, being careful not to bump the ruler. Repeat this process until all four sides are cut and then remove the block!

Tip: Stand while using your Orange Pop Rulers and also use a rotating mat!
