Trimming Blocks With Orange Pop Rulers

Kimberbell Orange Pop Rulers® are the easiest way to trim quilt blocks. Available in both square and rectangle shapes, these innovative tools help you visually center designs and cut blocks perfectly!

Let's take detailed look at the rulers and quickly review just how easy they are to use.

Ruler Anatomy

Orange Pop Rulers feature non-slip grips, centering marks, and extended corner channels. (We even include a small hole at the top if you'd like to hang them up!) As you'll notice, there are also helpful 1/4" grid lines.

Now that you see what they look like, let's move onto how to use them. (Again, it's VERY easy!) 😄

Step 1: Place Block on Cutting Mat

We recommend using Kimberbell's Rotating Cutting Mat with Orange Pop Rulers. Before you break out the rulers, though, first place your embroidered quilt block on the rotating mat.

Step 2: Visually Center Smallest Ruler

Now visually center the smallest ruler over your embroidered block, as shown here. (Don't worry about the design being larger than the ruler. This is intentional so you can center your design in that smaller space!)

📏Tip: Stand up while using Orange Pop Rulers!

Step 3: Place Additional Rulers

After starting with the smallest ruler, you'll now pop (hence the name Orange "Pop" Ruler!) the next size onto the first one. Continue snapping them on until the correct size is reached for the block.

Step 4: Remove Extra Rulers

Now, keeping the block centered, remove the extra inside rulers. (If possible, keep the larger rulers nestled together to create more surface area to hold while cutting.)

Step 5: Start Cutting Block

Right-Handed Cutting

If you're right-handed, insert the rotary cutter in the bottom left extended channel with the blade against the edge of the ruler (a 45 mm rotary cutter is recommended).

Holding the ruler steady, cut one smooth stroke up until the end of the cutting channel is reached. Set the rotary cutter aside.  (Because of the extended corner channels, you'll create a perfect corner!)

Left-Handed Cutting

If you're left-handed, insert the rotary cutter in the bottom right extended channel with the blade against the edge of the ruler (a 45 mm rotary cutter is recommended).

Holding the ruler steady, cut one smooth stroke up until the end of the cutting channel is reached. Set the rotary cutter aside. (Because of the extended corner channels, you'll create a perfect corner!)

Step 6: Rotate & Cut Again

Carefully rotate the cutting mat 90 degrees counterclockwise. (Be careful not to bump the ruler.) Starting at the new bottom left or bottom right (depending on which hand you're using), repeat step #5.

Step 7: Remove the Block

Repeat this same process until all four sides are cut, rotating the cutting mat between each of the cuts. Once you're finished, remove the block from the ruler.

All the Difference

Visually centering your designs with Orange Pop Rulers before you cut makes all the difference in the world. You can also use Orange Pop Rulers with great success on T-shirt quilts, denim quilts, and more!
